| 20-10-2008 | | | | Dalgasgroup’s Polish subsidiary, Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o., has recently signed a series of agreements that ensure that the company can transfer carbon credits from Poland to Denmark.
During the period 2007-2012 the company expects to reduce the emission of methane corresponding to 620,000 tonnes of CO2. This corresponds to the annual CO2 emission from approximately 15,000 Danish households. A considerable part of the reduction is expected to be transferred to the Danish pool by so-called Joint Implementation carbon credits as specified under the Kyoto Protocol.
The transfer of carbon credits has been approved by the Polish and Danish governments, and at the same time Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o. has concluded an agreement with the Danish Energy Agency, according to which the Danish government will purchase a number of the carbon credits as part of the government’s climate strategy.
Considerable reduction of greenhouse gas Through its subsidiary Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o., Dalgasgroup has been working on the recovery of gas from Polish landfill sites since 1998. This takes place at three landfill sites in the towns of Lubna, Legajny and Sosnowiec. The gas is extracted via a network of gas suction pipes that are laid down in the landfill sites and then used in the production of green electricity and heat. The electricity is sold to the national grid, whilst the heat is sold to the local district heating network and local businesses.
– The gas in the landfill sites is methane, which is a particularly potent greenhouse gas. One tonne of methane gas is equivalent to approximately 21 tonnes of CO2 in terms of its greenhouse effect. When the methane is burnt in the gas motors, the greenhouse effect is reduced correspondingly, explains Managing Director and CEO Ove Kloch, Dalgasgroup.
At the same time, the efficient combined heat and power production at the plants helps to replace fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas in the Polish energy system.
– The sale of carbon credits has made it possible to increase the reduction of greenhouse gases by increasing the recovery of gas and the production of eco-friendly energy at the landfill sites. The increased gas recovery and energy production would not have been possible without the revenue from the carbon credits, says Ove Kloch.
Comprehensive documentation The sale of carbon credits from Dalgasgroup’s Polish subsidiary takes place on the basis of particularly comprehensive documentation.
– Measuring equipment has been set up that measures the actual reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases at the plants, and there has been particular focus on documentation, explains Ove Kloch.
The carbon credits are validated by the German certification enterprise TÜV Rheinland and are approved by the Polish and Danish governments.
Reinvesting in Poland In addition, Dalgasgroup has promised the Polish government that a percentage of the profits from the sale of the credits will be invested in new projects that will enhance the environment and develop renewable energy production in Poland.
– We are working on the establishment of the recovery of gas from more landfill sites in Poland. In addition, we are in the process of developing a new area of activity in which we will support the development of bioenergy production, for example by using woodchips from the forests. And I am not in any doubt that other new areas will appear, says Lisbeth Erlands, director of Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o. and responsible for the establishment of a new business area within forest investment and energy in Dalgasgroup.
Profile: Dalgasgroup A/S is owned 100 percent by DDH. Dalgasgroup is responsible for the commercial side of DDH’s activities, which are concentrated within the areas of activity embodying nature, energy and the environment.
Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o. was originally founded by DDH. Today Hedeselskabet Sp. z o.o. is owned 100 percent by Dalgasgroup A/S and its activities concern renewable energy and forest management services.
