Mini-wetlands - a development project

Are mini-wetlands an instrument for agriculture?

With funding of DKK 4 million in 2009 and DKK 1 million in 2010, financial support has been provided for a project designed to ensure the targeted further development of a concept for so-called mini-wetlands. Mini-wetlands are small, compact facilities which are designed to clean water which is drained from agricultural land.

Mini-wetlands offer considerable potential for being able to purge drainage water of nitrogen and thereby reduce the environmental impact on the aquatic environment of run-off and drainage from agricultural land. Another benefit of mini-wetlands is that they help to create more diverse nature in landscapes which tend to be characterised by uniform cultivated crops.

An important aspect of the project is to document the effectiveness of mini-wetlands as a means of treating water. DDH is carrying out the project in collaboration with the subsidiaries Orbicon A/S and HedeDanmark a/s.

4 test facilities have been set set up in which investigations will be made as whether farmers can in future reduce the emission of nitrogen and phosphor to a sufficient degree.
